DWilsonOnline is the web-based journalism portfolio for Daniel Wilson, a Sacramento journalist who’s always looking for full-time, part-time or freelance work covering news, human interest and feature stories or tech/entertainment/video games.

Who is Daniel Wilson?

My name is Daniel Wilson and I recently earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism with a minor in communications studies (with a Public Relation emphasis) from California State University, Sacramento.

I transferred to Sacramento State in the fall of 2016, earning my Associate of Arts degree in journalism earlier that year from Sacramento City Community College.

What are you currently doing in the field of journalism and beyond? 

I am currently employed as a reporter and digital growth specialist by the McClatchy Company. I primarily work at The Sacramento Bee, but some of my work includes managing other California McClatchy-owned publications such as The Modesto BeeThe Fresno Bee and more.

Additionally, I am a freelance reporter with the West Sacramento News-Ledger, covering news, events and local government.

Third, I run social media channels and market for the Sacramento 49er Travel Plaza (located at 2828 El Centro Road). The social platforms used by the company include Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. I design, produce, edit and write for the 49er’s quarterly employee newsletter and handle all customer service requests via the company’s social channels.

What have you done in the past in the field of journalism? 

Past media and communications work includes Visit California — the state’s travel and tourism marketing organization — where I completed a one-year paid internship in 2014 in the organization’s industry-facing communications department.

From January 2015 to December 2018, I worked part-time for Visit California (a work-from-home contract position I was offered upon completing the internship) managing its online digital asset management system (WebDAM) for its communications department.

I have held several positions for newspaper publications since getting involved with journalism my freshman year of high school. In the fall of 2016, I was a news reporter for The State Hornet, the student-run campus newspaper at CSUS.

Prior media positions include editor-in-chief, online editor-in-chief, contributing editor, online news editor, print news editor and staff writer for the Sacramento City College student-run newspaper, Express, and editor-in-chief, managing editor and staff writer for the Sacramento City College student-run magazine, Mainline.

Furthermore, I won several awards and scholarships throughout my time on these publications.

In high school, I served as editor-in-chief, news editor and staff writer for River City High School’s campus newspaper, The Review, which was published monthly in the News-Ledger of West Sacramento.

Additionally, I interned as an editor for America’s Comedy (a now-defunct online publication covering the comedy industry that was based in Sacramento), contributed to a few other media websites like AndNowYouKnow (a now-defunct website covering the produce industry) and Sacramento Press, created and edited a newsletter for the California Delta Conservancy and I own and run a Sacramento-based video game news site with a focus on the local connection: Sac City Gamer.

On the public relations side of things, I recently completed a media kit for the Center for Land-Based Learning, a Winters-based non-profit organization that specializes in farmer training. This was for a class project during my final semester at CSUS, but much of the content created was or will be published by the organization and the press release was published by the Woodland Daily Democrat.

What other journalism and/or communications skills and experience do you have? 

In addition to my journalism skills, which include proficiency in reporting, writing, editing, use of AP Style and a vast knowledge of journalism best practices, ethics and styles, I’ve picked up many skills and abilities in my 18-plus years working in and around the industry.

At The Sacramento Bee, I’ve gained skills in working with Associated Press and other wire services, advanced social media skills and have learned to work with a diverse suite of programs and software used in running online and print newspapers.

In 2014, during my internship with Visit California’s communications department, I applied my journalism skills in editing, writing and working with PowerPoint and Excel; creating and editing HTML-based web pages; creating, editing and publishing the organization’s monthly business-to-business e-newsletter; and drafting, editing and copy editing documents and various industry publications as well as social media posts.

For the role of WebDAM assistant — in conjunction with VCA’s creative development manager — I tagged, organized, uploaded and managed the organization’s video and photo assets and helped out with projects as needed.

As an intern editor for America’s Comedy, I applied my editing skills using AP Style and gained experience working back-and-forth with reporters to improve their stories. I also had an opportunity to work with SEO tools and WordPress and wrote a few stories.

In running Sac City Gamer, I have expanded my WordPress skills as well as gained experience in finding and reporting from press releases, legally applying images and videos found online and other skills and abilities related to online publishing.

I have designed and edited newsletters via Microsoft Publisher, examples of which can be found on this portfolio.

In my role as social and marketing manager for the Sacramento 49er Travel Plaza, I design graphics for the social media accounts as well as handle customer relations and marketing. This includes, writing and editing all content for social channels, working with managers and human resources to curate content like deals and news, brainstorming and researching ideas for rich posts and maintaining a knowledge base on best practices for audience and customer growth.

Other skills include: Basic photography and photo editing experience, some experience with InDesign and Photoshop, print and online budgeting and planning, and basic-to-advanced skills in many other related areas, including the use of several social media platforms, online newsletter systems, web-based services such as Chartbeat, CrowdTangle, Cheetah Digital, Brightcove, Slack, AP Images/Newsroom/Stylebook online, Tweetdeck, Hootsuite, Google Docs and several proprietary content-management systems.

What drives you to succeed?

I pride myself on being able to easily adapt to new situations and tasks as well as being able to learn new skills quickly. I keep my writing abilities as diversified as possible and can write in just about any style or genre.

The general feedback I’ve received, based on my work, is that I’m most skilled at writing news and human interest stories, but if I were to ever write for a niche category at a publication, I would probably want to focus on technology, entertainment and video games.

One of the many things that attracts me to journalism is the ability to experience and report on many different subjects. The people I’ve met, the events I’ve attended and the many media-related experiences I’ve had would not be possible without journalism. But most importantly, I enjoy sharing information with the community because I feel that being informed is essential to being a contributing member of a democratic society.

I thrive on fast-paced, deadline-driven environments and I’m always ready to take on new challenges. Given an opportunity to bring my skills to any organization, I am determined to accomplish every task set in front of me in an efficient, timely manner that goes above and beyond expectations.

What are your career goals in the near future?

The way I always answer this question is by saying I just want to write. I’ve worked hard to ensure I can adapt to just about any workplace. My portfolio speaks for itself in showing the diversity and reach of my abilities.

I’m looking to find a good fit at a journalism publication or a communication company where I can hold a long-time position and contribute to society with thoroughly-researched, highly-accurate, informative and interesting content that people will enjoy reading and remember for years to come.

Ideally, I would like to work in the role of a digital content producer or as a beat writer for a local media organization. I’m also interested in working in public information or public relations.
